# Painted Crest

> Arms you make for your family, drawn by the herald’s rules.

Painted Crest makes coats of arms for families. Adopt one of our crests, build one from where your family came from and what it does, or describe the one you imagine and we paint it. Choose the colour around it, add your own words above, across or below, and we print it on canvas, fine-art paper, shirts, hoodies and blankets. Part of the Painted family.

## What it is

- A configurator (https://paintedcrest.vercel.app/make) that makes a coat of arms for a family and prints it.
- Four ways to a crest:
  1. Adopt one of 81 new crests drawn from the colours and charges of 31 nations.
  2. Build one from the family's nations of origin and what it does or loves; the heraldry engine
proposes six designs and gives the reason for every part.
  3. Describe it in words; an image model paints two versions (4 free passes per visitor,
     then 10 more for $10).
  4. Write a blazon, the formal language of arms; the drawing follows it.
- The customer chooses the colour around the crest (any colour), and may add their own words above,
across or below it, in one of four typefaces.
- Every design is checked against the heralds' rule of tincture and drawn as vector art at full print size.

## What it is not

- No surname has a coat of arms. The College of Arms: "There is no such thing as a 'coat of arms for a
surname'." Painted Crest never sells an existing family's arms and never claims a crest belongs to a name.
- These are assumed arms: a design a family adopts as its own, with no grant behind it. A grant comes
from a heraldic authority such as the College of Arms or the Court of the Lord Lyon.
- It does not draw sacred or living-tradition designs (Northwest Coast, Maori, Hawaiian, Anishinaabe,
adinkra) and refuses requests for them.
